State TV: Saudi King Undergoing Medical Tests in Riyadh Hospital

Saudi Arabia's elderly King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz was admitted to a hospital in the capital Riyadh on Wednesday for medical tests, state media reported on Wednesday, citing a royal court statement. King Abdullah was born in the court of his father, King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud, in the early 1920s. The softly-spoken monarch, who took power in 2005 after the death of King Fahd, has undergone surgery in the past few years related to a herniated disk. “The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, may God keep him, entered today Wednesday... the King Abdulaziz Medical City of the National Guard in Riyadh to undergo some medical tests,” the statement said, according to state news agency SPA. State media last week reported that King Abdullah had left Riyadh for his desert farm at Rawdat Khuraim northeast of the capital.

US Vetoes Palestinian Statehood Resolution at UN

The United States has vetoed a United Nations Security Council draft resolution on Palestinian statehood that demanded Israel withdraw from the occupied territories. Even without the U.S. veto, the measure would have fallen one vote short of the nine it needed among the council's 15 members in order to pass. U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Samantha Power explained the veto by saying Israeli-Palestinian peace can only come from "hard choices and compromises" and that the resolution would not move the sides closer to a two-state solution. "We voted against this resolution not because we are indifferent to the daily hardships or the security threats endured by Palestinians and Israelis. But because we know that those hardships will not cease and those threats will not subside until the parties reach a comprehensive settlement achieved through negotiations,” said Power. Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian representative at the U.N., criticized the council and said it is not fulfilling its responsibilities. "The Security Council has once again failed to uphold its charter duties to address these crises and to meaningfully contribute to a peaceful and lasting solution in accordance with its own resolutions," said Mansour. The draft would have given Israel until the end of 2017 to pull out of the West Bank and Gaza back to the pre-1967 war borders. It also called for Israel and the Palestinians to reach a peace deal within one year. The French News Agency quoted a Hamas spokesman criticizing Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, saying the push for a Security Council resolution was a "unilateral decision" and that he has "taken the Palestinian decision-making process hostage." Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu praised the vote Wednesday, thanking the United States, Australia, Rwanda and Nigeria. The U.S. and Australia voted against the measure, while Rwanda and Nigeria were two of the five countries that abstained.

Essebsi Sworn in as Tunisian President

Beji Caid Essebsi has been sworn in as Tunisia's new president, becoming the country's first freely elected leader since it gained independence from France in 1956. Essebsi took the oath of office Wednesday at a ceremony in the parliament, where his secular Nidaa Tounes party won the most seats in an October election. The 88-year-old president won a runoff election this month, defeating incumbent Moncef Marzouki, who had served as Tunisia's interim president since the 2011 ouster of longtime leader Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali. Essebsi has pledged to move forward with a united Tunisia and said he hopes his election marks the start of a new future for the country. He previously served as a minister in Ben Ali's administration and as an advisor to Tunisia's first president, Habib Bourguiba.

Abandoned Migrant Ship Reaches Italian Coast

A cargo ship found adrift in the Adriatic Sea with at least 600 migrants on board has docked at an Italian port. The Moldovan-flagged cargo ship arrived at the southern port of Gallipoli early Wednesday morning. The ship was met by an Italian Red Cross workers and other emergency personnel. There is no information so far on the nationalities or conditions of the migrants. The Italian navy took over the ship Tuesday after discovering the crew had abandoned the vessel and rigged the engine to crash into the coast. The ship was first spotted earlier in the day near the Greek island of Corfu, after someone on board sent out a distress call. Greek officials boarded the ship, found nothing wrong, and sent it on its way. Thousands of migrants, mostly from North Africa, die trying try to cross the sea to Europe every year to escape war and poverty at home. Some use dangerous and flimsy boats while others pay human smugglers who often abandon their cargo at sea.

Italy Presidential Choice Poses Problem for PM Renzi

An expected decision by Italy's president to step down next year would leave Prime Minister Matteo Renzi facing one of his most delicate political challenges. After dropping hints for months, 89-year-old Giorgio Napolitano is likely to indicate in an end-of-year address on Wednesday evening that he will leave his post early next year, although he may not name an exact date. The Italian head of state holds wide but loosely defined powers, including appointing prime ministers, and can veto legislation and use the office's moral weight to influence the political agenda. If Renzi cannot steer an acceptable candidate through the complicated presidential election process, it will raise doubts about his ability to push through economic reforms and planned changes to the constitution and electoral system. That would fuel speculation about early elections, adding to the political uncertainty surrounding the euro zone. Napolitano, a former communist respected in Europe and Washington, reluctantly agreed to a second term last year after a deadlocked election threatened to leave Italy politically adrift, but said he would not serve the full seven years. Months of speculation about potential successors have thrown up names ranging from European Central Bank President Mario Draghi to current Economy Minister Pier Carlo Padoan or Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti. Renzi, 39, appointed by Napolitano less than a year ago as Italy's youngest-ever prime minister, said on Monday he was “absolutely certain” a successor could be elected. But the process is full of hazards that could absorb valuable political energy as Italy struggles to pull out of recession. Electing a president involves about 1,000 voters -- members of parliament and representatives from the regions. It allows for multiple rounds of voting by secret ballot, offering ample opportunity for revenge to the many party enemies Renzi has made during his whirlwind months in charge. Former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, still burning with resentment at Napolitano's presumed role in his tumultuous 2011 downfall, has insisted that an agreement on the president will be needed for his support for wider constitutional reforms. But the experience of 2013, when former Prime Minister Romano Prodi was rejected by around 100 disgruntled lawmakers in his own party, also underlines the danger from within. That fiasco toppled the then-leader of the Democratic Party Pierluigi Bersani, who had proposed Prodi, ultimately paving the way for Renzi to seize control of the party a few months later.
